I’m in South Carolina this week visiting my family, and I’m reminded how much I miss the Southern language. Beyond the accent, us Southerners have our own language. Some of my favorites.
- He’s as country as a turnip. Said by the sales rep for the local gas company about one of the workers. It means that he’s not the brightest guy, but he’s a hard worker.
- Y’all favor. Said to me by a woman at the bank where my aunt works. This expression means that you resemble each other / fave similar features.
- Jockey Lot. This one is so regional it’s only in my home town. It means a flea market. Every Saturday and Sunday, the Jocket Lot is open, and when I was young, used to be the place where you’d re-buy your hubcaps if they got stolen.
- He’s cures. Sort of shorthand for “curious” means someone that is very particular about things and only likes things a certain way.
- Buggy. This is what we call a shopping cart.
